AMAA Board of Director's Meeting

Meeting was called to order by President Larry Breon at 1:30 p.m.

Newly elected AMAA Board Members were recognized: Scott Bilslend, Grand Island, Neb.; Mike Holden, Scranton, Iowa; and Jirl Buck, Madill, Okla.. Re-elected AMAA Board Members were recognized. They are, Bill Thorne, Dalhart, Texas, and John Dickerson, Martinsville, Ind.

AMAA Board Members absent: Phil Core, Pleasantville, Iowa; Larry Nielsen, Granby, Mo.; Mark Beauprez, Byers, Colo.; and Jerry Adamson, Cody, Neb.

Motion was made and seconded to retain the existing AMAA Executive Committee for the upcoming year. Motion passed.

President: Larry Breon, Batavia, Ill.
1st Vice President: Bill Thorne, Dalhart, Texas
2nd Vice President: Marty Van Vliet, Otley, Iowa
Secretary/Treasurer: Phil Core, Pleasantville, Iowa
At-Large: Fred Nessler, Springfield, Ill.

Motion was made and seconded to accept secretary’s report as printed in the Voice. Motion passed.

Committee Reports:

Breed Improvement
Motion was made and seconded to change the range of acceptable days for weaning and yearling data. Current weaning days, 160-250 days, and will change to 130-270 days. Current yearling days are 320-410 days, and will change to 300-470 days. Also, there must be 60 days between the weaning and yearling days. Motion passed.

Motion was made and seconded to adjust policy regarding the reporting of EPD’s online and on registration certificates for bulls and females that did not have individual performance data reported. Once a bull or female reaches a “progeny proof” threshold, EPD’s will be placed online and will be present on progeny pedigree’s. Motion passed.
Motion was made and seconded to review existing genetic abnormality policies and how they would affect future genetic abnormalities that would be present in the AMAA data base. Information is to be dispersed to AMAA Board of Directors for their review and a telephone conference call is to be held no later than March 15, 2009. A motion to amend was made and seconded to leave current PHA and TH policy as it is with any new ruling to only affect new genetic abnormalities that would be present in the AMAA data base. Amendment failed. Original motion passed.

AMAA Board requested the Executive Vice-President to research the published MARC Across-Breed-EPD’s as they relate to the Maine-Anjou breed. It is felt the current numbers that are published do not reflect the modern day Maine-Anjou breed as it relates to its performance in today’s beef industry. After review, the Maine-Anjou breed may request to pull our numbers until we have completed the current research project at MARC that is using present day Maine-Anjou sire lines.

Buildings/Grounds
No motions brought before the board. No major budgetary items were included in 2009 budget concerning the AMAA office site.

Finance
Discussion was held regarding the reporting of “performance only” applications. It was discussed to charge a fee for “performance only” that is submitted on hard copy and continue the present policy of no charge for “performance only” that is submitted online.
Discussion was also held regarding the possibility of reduced registration rates for work that is submitted on-line. Staff has been instructed to upgrade online capabilities and both these issues will be re-visited during the summer meetings.

Motion was made and seconded to accept the final 2008 AMAA Profit and Loss Statement. Motion passed.

Motion was made and seconded to accept the 2009 AMAA Budget as presented. Motion to amend and seconded to allow Executive Vice-President to spend an added $10,000 if need be as it pertains to another Maine-Anjou breed presentation on the “Cattle Show” shown on RFD-TV. Amendment passed. Motion passed.

Discussion was held regarding the AMAA cooperating with the Dexter Cattle Association concerning the housing of the Dexter Association data along with yet to be defined office activities. The Executive Vice-President was given the direction to work in the best interests of AMAA to complete ongoing discussions with the Dexter Association.

Long Range
Updates were given regarding the 2008 joint venture project with the American Chianina Association (ACA).

A review of the 2007-2012 strategic action plan was discussed.

No motions brought before the board.

Magazine
Discussion was held regarding the changes being made in the production of the Voice magazine and its relation to the bottom line.

Discussion was held regarding the 2008 profit and loss statement as well the proposed 2009 Voice budget.

No motions brought before the board.

Promo/Marketing
Reports were given regarding the National Sire Test and the National Bull Test. In an attempt to further educate and promote the Maine-Anjou breed, David Steen, AMAA Commercial Marketing Director, is setting up across the country “Town Hall” meetings. If interested in pursuing or learning more about that venue of breed promotion, please contact Mr. Steen.

Sale
Discussion was held with regard to continuing the World Class Sale in conjunction with the American Royal. Per committee recommendation that sale will again be held in 2009.
A lengthy discussion was held in committee regarding the National Maine-Anjou Sale and the Cattleman’s Choice Sale, both held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show. Between now and the summer board meetings the Executive Vice-President is to solicit thoughts from both consignors and buyers. Possible changes to sale regulations will then be discussed at the summer meetings.

Motion was made and seconded to combine the heifer and bull sale in the “yards.” This would mean there will not be a National Class Act sale on the “hill” in 2010. Motion passed.

Show
Motion made and seconded to discontinue the “Draw Down” project that has been held in conjunction with the World Class activities at the American Royal. Motion passed.

Motion made and seconded to discontinue the extra premium money that has been supplied to the World Show at the American Royal. Motion passed.

Discussion was held concerning the present system by which open show judges are selected.

Motion was made and seconded to change the process accordingly:
- Any AMAA member may submit to the Executive Vice President or AMAA Board of Director a name to be added to the judges list by National Junior Heifer Show Show time.
- The AMAA board will then by discussion/vote reduce the open show judge list to a maximum of 40 names. The board will use the same process to reduce the pen show judges list to a maximum of 25 names.

- After the final listing of judges, the names will be put in a hat, one for open shows and one for the pen shows. Per an agreed upon order of judge selection for the national shows, an individual judges name will be drawn out of a hat to correspond with each show. The same will be done for pen show judge selection. This process will also be used to select alternate judges.

- Beginning with the 2009-2010 show season, judge selection, which has already been decided, any judge that has been selected to do a national open show, pen show, national junior show or junior show at the National Western, will be taken off the list for a two year period and will not be invited to judge a national AMAA show for that period of time.

Motion passed

Discussion was held regarding the upcoming “She’s A Lady” futurity to be held at the National Junior Maine-Anjou Show in Murfreesboro, Tenn. If you have purchased a heifer that has been breeder nominated and you have not yourself kept up with the nomination process, please contact AMAA for details. Participation is needed all the way through the nomination processes in order to insure a worthwhile premium schedule.

Youth
Discussion was held in committee with regard to 2009 scheduling and minor changes in contest format.

No motions brought before the board.

Old Business
None

New Business
Agreed upon to hold the summer board/committee meetings in conjunction with the National Junior Maine-Anjou Show.

AMAA Annual Membership Meeting
Jan. 31, 2009 - Fort Worth, Texas

Meeting was called to order by President Larry Breon at 10 a.m. Motion was made and seconded to accept the secretaries report. Motion passed. Motion was made and seconded to accept the financial report. Motion passed

AMAA board members who finished their terms were recognized for their time and effort. They are: Larry Rademacher, Loup City, Neb.; Matt Elliott, Marysville, Kan.; and Don McLain, Gill, Colo.

Newly elected AMAA board members were recognized: Scott Bilslend, Grand Island, Neb.; Mike Holden, Scranton, Iowa; and Jirl Buck, Madill, Okla. Re-elected AMAA board members were recognized. They are, Bill Thorne, Dalhart, Texas, and John Dickerson, Martinsville, Ind.

Annual Association Report

AMAA Executive Vice President, John Boddicker, gave a summary of 2008 breed issue highlights as well as reports on the different committee discussions.

Mr. Boddicker explained the process that took place in 2008 regarding the joint venture discussions between the American Chianina Association (ACA) and the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA). The respective executive committee’s met several different times to discuss the format under which such a joint venture could be built. After having presented the proposal to both the ACA Board of Directors and AMAA Board of Directors this past summer the project is still in need of further research and discussion. It was pointed out that if such discussions progress the issue will come before the membership for vote before any action would be taken. Prior to the membership vote, the AMAA would do its best job to inform the AMAA membership of the joint venture structure.

Regarding the committee reports, Mr. Boddicker highlighted issues that were brought up in each committee meeting, making special note of motions that would be coming in front of the AMAA Board of Directors. For a full report of those actions, please refer to AMAA Board of Director minutes present in this issue of the Voice.

Reminder to the AMAA membership, in 2009 there are two AMAA membership meetings held. With the first recently held at the 2009 National Maine-Anjou Show, Fort Worth, Texas. The next AMAA membership meeting will be held this October in conjunction with the American Royal Maine-Anjou activities. Please watch the Voice for specifics of committee meetings.

With no old business or new business brought before the meeting motion was made and seconded to adjourn.
