Bryan's

John, has
been feeding
cattle for
50 years and
his son,
Bryan, began
feeding
cattle
commercially,
in his own
operation,
after
graduating
from college
in 1981.
John and
Bryan have
both fed
Maine-Anjou
calves for
many years
and have
found the
Maine-Anjou
breed to be
a good fit
for both
operations.
They always
look for
Maine-Anjou
calves that
are
extremely
thick,
structurally
correct,
with enough
depth and
capacity to
get to heavy
weights
quickly and
gain
efficiently.

Maine-Anjou
cattle,
whether
bought or
raised, have
consistently
been some of
the top pens
year in and
year out,"
says the
Nagel's.
The father /
son pair are
always in
the market
to purchase
more
Maine-Anjou
calves. In
the future,
they would
like to have
their feed
yards filled
with
Maine-Anjou
influenced
cattle.
Both are
active in
promoting
the beef
cattle
industry and
have served
as officers
of their
local and
state
cattlemens
associations
and are long
time members
of the
National
Cattlemen
Beef
Association.
Just a few
years ago
Johns other

was selected
as Seedstock
Producer of

Producer of

The 2008
Commercial
Producer of
the year
goes to GTM
Maines, Gary
Mitchell and
family,
Stuart, Neb.
Gary started
AI'ing his
400 head of
Angus based
cows to
Maine-Anjou
bulls in the
late 1980s
in hopes of
raising club
calves for
his four
daughters to
show in 4-H
and FFA.
After the
first calf
crop he
noticed that
his
Maine-Anjou
sired calves
were
heavier, due
in part to
hybrid
vigor, plus
they had
more
thickness
and eye
appeal along
with great
dispositions.
Realizing
the added
value that
Maine-Anjou
genetics
created,
this
producer has
continued to
place added
selection
pressure for
efficient
gains, added
marbling and
outstanding
cutabilities.
For the past
five years,
this
commercial
operation
has been
extremely
successful
in winning
many awards
and just
recently his
calves won
the champion
individual
carcass and
his
group-of-five
was named
reserve
grand
champion
overall in
the National
Maine-Anjou
Feeding
Trial.
Feedyards
have also
experienced
the true
value of his
cattle as he
is currently
selling his
Maine-Anjou
feeder
calves for a
premium at
his local
sale barn.
This year he
had buyers
from Iowa,
Kansas and
Nebraska
trying to
buy his
calves, but
the same
Nebraska
buyer who
has
purchased
them the
last four
years bought
them again.
Gary's 400
head cowherd
is currently
comprised of
predominantly
low
percentage
Maine-Anjou
Angus cross
females that
are bred to
Maine-Anjou
bulls that
are either
home raised
or purchased
from Green
Valley
cattle and
other
Maine-Anjou
breeders.
In addition
to their
very
successful
commercial
operation,
they have
begun an
embryo
transfer
program and
are flushing
some of
their top
registered
donor cows.
This has
enabled them
to market
show cattle,
embryos and
breeding
stock to
increase
their
operations
total
profitability.

The 2008
Seedstock
Producer of
the Year
goes to a
complete
family
operation,
Griswold
Cattle Co.,
LLC,
Stillwater,
Okla. A
commitment
to breeding
quality
Maine-Anjou
cattle has
made this
firm one of
the most
prestigious
cattle
operations
in the
country.
The Griswold
family is
unique in
their
approach to
the cattle
industry
because of
their
life-long
challenge of
raising
quality
cattle
whether it
is
commercially
or in the
seedstock
business.
This
operation
was started
with an
Angus based
cowherd and
have been
using
Maine-Anjou
genetics for
over twenty
years. The
focus of the
Griswold's
breeding
program has
always been
directed to
develop a
superior
cowherd and
use the best
sires
available.
In recent
years this
operation
has raised
and promoted
some of the
top Maine
sires in the
breed for
themselves
and their
clients. For
years they
have
marketed
their
Maine-Anjou
females very
successfully
through the
Exposure
Sale each
December.
Their
commercial
bulls are
sold both
privately
and in their
very well
accepted
Grass to
Grid Bull
Sale every
April. With
cattle
operations
in both
South Dakota
and Oklahoma
this cattle
operation
has been
extremely
successful
in every
avenue that
they have
competed in.
They have
achieved
numerous
accolades
from show
ring success
to raising
the highest
selling
Maine-Anjou
feeder
calves that
also succeed
when
harvested on
grids, a
complete
commercial
seedstock
family
operation
rich in the
tradition of
raising
quality
cattle.
